mistake, So, How did on wednesday night's earthquake become 6.6 richter.
The source of misinformation, was the social media site twiiter.
As said by times nation, (The times of india), twitter was the first source of media to get the information of earthquake @ 11:28 pm on 7th of september, 2011.
Same Tweet started getting spread, as Indonesia had 6.6 richter scale earthquake just preceeding day (i.e, on Tuesday), now, within minutes, TV new channel and news agencies, who often scrounge twitter for real-time information and news picked up these details. The epicentre in these initial reports ranged from Nepal-India Border.
Around an hour after the event, IMD released its preliminary, report in the earthquake, putting its magnitude @ 4.2 and showing the epicentre in sonipat district adjoining Delhi.
The 6.6 richter earthquake is 251 times more powerful than a 4.2 richter quake.
So, Social Media Site played one of the important role in depicting wrong magnitude, which was later on verified and was shown the right richter.
